About Everest Base Camp Trek

A trek to Everest Base Camp is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that offers a transforming adventure into the heart of the Himalayas. This breathtaking journey transports you to a world of natural wonders, rich cultural experiences, and unique high-altitude scenery.

The journey begins in Kathmandu, where you’ll board a thrilling flight to Tenzing Hillary Airport in Lukla which is located in Eastern Nepal known as Everest Region between the Himalayas’ towering peaks. From here, your adventure through the Sherpa heartland begins, bringing you through farmed fields and lovely villages.

One of the most remarkable aspects of this trek is the opportunity to become a part of the Sherpa community, to learn about their traditions, and to witness their daily lives. As you traverse the trail, you’ll encounter charming Sherpa villages like Lukla, Phakding, Monjo, Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Deboche, Dingboche, and finally, Gorakshep. These settlements offer a glimpse into the Sherpa culture, their warm hospitality, and the enduring spirit of the mountain people.

However the Everest base camp trek is not just about the destination; it’s about the gradual ascent and acclimatization process that allows you to adapt to the high-altitude environments safely. Along the way, you’ll visit the remarkable Thyangboche Monastery, a serene and spiritual haven amidst the towering peaks. In addition, the views of majestic Ama Dablam and other Himalayan giants serve as a constant reminder of the awe-inspiring beauty that surrounds you.

Your ultimate destination is the Everest Base Camp itself, a place of pilgrimage for adventurers from around the world. Here, you’ll witness climbers preparing for their ascent and soak in the incredible scenery. But the journey doesn’t end here; it’s an opportunity to ascend Kala Patthar, a challenging but rewarding endeavor that rewards you with an expansive and breathtaking view of Mount Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, and the surrounding peaks. It’s a moment that etches itself into your memory forever.

Day by Day Itinerary

Upon your arrival in Kathmandu, you will be greeted at the airport and transferred to your hotel. Later in the evening, we will have a pre-departure meeting regarding the details of your trip.

In the morning, we will pick you from your hotel and then drive to the airport for our scenic flight to Lukla (2,800m). Our trek starts from Lukla as we trek through the picturesque Chaurikharka village and descend towards Dudhkoshi Ghat, situated at an altitude of 2,530 meters (8,300 feet), until we finally arrive at Phakding. Today’s trek will be relatively short and pleasant, allowing us to acclimatize to the increasing altitude. During our spare time, we can explore the nearby monasteries, such as the Rimishung Monastery, immersing ourselves in the local culture and traditions. This period will also serve as a preparation for the longer trek that awaits us on the following day.

In the morning, we will resume our trek along the scenic northern bank of the DudhKoshi River, reveling in the awe-inspiring vistas that unfold before us. Our path will lead us across several suspension bridges spanning the turbulent waters of the DudhKoshi River, including the renowned Hillary Suspension Bridge. Continuing onward, we will reach the Sagarmatha National Park check post, where our permits will be registered, and ascend through the dense forests. It is here, amidst the verdant foliage, that we will catch our first glimpse of the majestic Mt. Everest. Passing ahead, our footsteps will guide us to Namche Bazaar, the vibrant gateway to Everest, where we will arrive and embrace the spirit of this lively mountain town.

Today will be our first day of acclimatization. During our stay in Namche Bazaar, we will have various hiking options to explore the surrounding areas. We can visit the Hillary School, an educational institution established by Sir Edmund Hillary himself, and immerse ourselves in the Sherpa settlement to gain insights into their rich culture. Additionally, we can venture to the Syangboche Airport, one of the highest airports in the world, and observe the local yak farms. However, a must-do for Everest enthusiasts is hiking up to the Everest View Hotel. From this vantage point, you will be rewarded with awe-inspiring and breathtaking views of the majestic Mt. Everest, an experience not to be missed.

Departing from Namche Bazaar, our trek continues as we cross the DudhKosi River, aptly named due to its milky appearance. Enveloped by enchanting rhododendron forests, we are treated to captivating vistas of Everest and Ama Dablam as we make our way up the valley. Upon reaching PhunkiTenga, we traverse the river and embark on an ascent through the lush forest towards Tengboche. The Tengboche monastery awaits us, offering a splendid vantage point to behold the majestic peaks of Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Kangtega, Thamserku, and Tobuche. A 15-minute walk from Tengboche leads us to our lodge in the serene village of Deboche.

Following a nourishing breakfast, our next destination is Dingboche. Along the way, we will encounter numerous Chortens (Buddhist shrines), mani walls (stone walls adorned with prayer wheels), and picturesque villages that dot the landscape. Notably, we will pass through Pangboche, a village that offers breathtaking views of the majestic Mt. Ama Dablam. As we continue our ascent, the altitude gradually increases, and as we approach Dingboche, you will notice fields surrounded by sturdy stone walls, serving as protective barriers for the crops. It is remarkable to witness how the locals manage to cultivate barley, buckwheat, and potatoes in this challenging environment.

As we have arrived in Dingboche, today marks our second day dedicated to acclimatization. Having gained significant altitude, it is crucial to allow our bodies to adjust to the thin air and high elevation. However, to make the most of our time, we can engage in a hike to Nagajun Hill, which stands at approximately 5,050 meters, or alternatively, venture towards the village of Chukung. Both options offer stunning vistas of prominent peaks such as Ama Dablam and Makalu, along with the captivating sight of lakes and glaciers adorning the landscape. This enriching experience will keep us occupied while providing ample opportunities to appreciate the natural beauty that surrounds us.

As we continue our trek, we should be prepared for a more gradual yet challenging ascent due to the increasing altitude. Our path will lead us past Dungla, but not before facing a demanding and steep climb to the summit of a high hill. At the top, we will encounter memorial stupas, solemnly dedicated to the climbers and trekkers who tragically lost their lives on Everest over the years. This serves as a poignant reminder of the mountain’s unforgiving nature. The trail then leads us through rugged mountainous terrain, eventually leading us to Lobuche. This small settlement offers captivating views of Mount Lobuche, Mount Pumori, and the majestic Nuptse, providing us with a breathtaking backdrop for our trip.

Today marks the pinnacle of our trek as we set out to conquer Base Camp. We start our hike early in the morning, trekking alongside the formidable Khumbu Glacier, the highest glacier in the world. The path weaves its way over rocky moraines, leading us towards the settlement of GorakShep, a village nestled amidst snow-capped mountains. Upon reaching GorakShep, we will leave our belongings behind and embark on a hike up to Base Camp. The awe-inspiring views from Everest Base Camp will captivate our senses, providing an opportunity to capture photographs, reflect on our remarkable journey, and celebrate our achievements. After cherishing these unforgettable moments, we will make our way back to GorakShep.

We will commence our day by waking up early in the morning, preparing for a revitalizing hike to Kala Patthar. This ascent will grant us the remarkable opportunity to witness a sunrise view above the majestic Mount Everest and its neighboring peaks, including Nuptse, Changtse, and Lhotse. It is during this moment that you will have the most favorable conditions to capture breathtaking photographs of these iconic mountains. After immersing ourselves in the awe-inspiring panorama and allowing the beauty of the surroundings to seep into our souls, we will retrace our steps back to GorakShep. Following a satisfying breakfast at GorakShep, we will retrace our way back to Pheriche.

It’s important to note that both the trek to Everest Base Camp and the climb to Kala Patthar are physically demanding. Depending on the group’s abilities and weather conditions, we may adjust the order.

After having breakfast at the hotel, we will trek down towards Tengboche. Our route takes us through enchanting rhododendron forests as we make our way across the ImjaKhola bridge. Continuing on, we traverse through a juniper forest, immersing ourselves in the natural beauty of the surroundings. Upon arriving at Tenboche, you can visit Tengboche Monastery, one of the largest Monastery in Khumbu Region. From Tengboche, you will have panoramic view of the Himalayan Mountains, including the well-known peaks of Tawache, Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and Thamserku.

If the weather remains clear, the views of the mountains as we approach Namche Bazaar are truly remarkable. As we near the end of our trek, we will have leisure time to explore the Tibetan shops, searching for souvenirs, or simply wander around the bustling Sherpa capital and unwind with a cup of coffee. Leaving Namche Bazaar behind, we descend through the forest, making our way towards the DudhKosi River, and continue to retrace by crossing and re-crossing the river multiple times. Finally, we exit Sagarmatha National Park and arrive at Monjo, marking our progress towards the conclusion of our memorable adventure.

As we make our way back, we retrace our steps along the east bank of the DudhKosi River, following the familiar path towards Lukla. This gives us a chance to unwind, reflect upon the incredible journey we have undertaken since our arrival in Lukla, and appreciate the warm hospitality of the Sherpa people. It’s a time to relax, soak in the memories of the truly remarkable days we’ve experienced, and embrace the unique culture and traditions that have enriched our adventure.

Our return to Kathmandu will depend on the weather conditions. If the weather permits, we will board a flight from Lukla back to Kathmandu. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, we will drop you to your respective hotels, where you can settle in and relax after our exhilarating trekking expedition.
